Commenting on the Government’s strategy to transform support for young people leaving care, Anne Longfield, Children’s Commissioner for England, said: “I welcome the ambitious plans in this strategy for improving the support that care leavers receive. I am very pleased that the Government is exploring ways to help these young people prepare for life after care, to access education and employment, to get excellent health and mental care, and find financial stability. We need to make sure that some form of care is still available even after young people have left care. We don’t cut off our own children’s lifeline just because they have left home – we mustn’t do the same to children for whom we all have a responsibility. I will shortly be publishing a report on widening access to apprenticeships for children in care and care leavers.”
