Commenting on youth justice annual statistics 2015-16 published by the Ministry of Justice and the Youth Justice Board for England and Wales, Anne Longfield, Children’s Commissioner for England said:
“We’ve seen a huge fall in the number of children in trouble with the law in the last decade, and I’m delighted to see that trend continue. Fewer children are being held in custody.
“However, the increasing prevalence of assaults and self-harm among children in custody is very concerning. This further underlines the need to reform our custody system in line with the conclusions of last year’s Taylor review.”
