We made an animation for Hillingdon about what it’s like to be in care. The video is aimed at raising awareness with professionals about what it is like to be in care.
I first got involved with the Walking in Our Shoes video because there was a competition, with a prize of £20, to design a cartoon character for an animation about being a young person in care. I wanted my character to be relatable to other young people in care. When I designed my character, Micah, it was easy because I made her the polar opposite of myself in her behaviour. I intended for her to be mixed raced but I was open to interpretation.
I heard from Helen (corporate parenting manager) that my character had been picked and she came to my house to give me my prize. When she saw me she asked me if I wanted to be one of the voices for the animation. Helen also asked me to design another character, Mohammed. I most enjoyed doing the voice over as it was a really good insight into what it’s like to do voice-over work and it was good fun. If we made mistakes we could laugh about it and it didn’t matter as we could redo it.
This project is important to me because I think I put a lot of effort into it. I designed two of the characters and most of the backgrounds. I like art and creating things and wanted to be able to say that I’d helped to make it.
From the video I’d like professionals to know more about what it’s like to be in care and not all ask the same questions.
