We are pleased to publish a review of the types of evidence available from engagement with children in care and care leavers. We commissioned the National Children’s Bureau supported by Research in Practice to review this evidence to help us consider how best to collate existing knowledge and insight.

This review is technical in nature and we have not drawn out substantive findings about children in care and care leavers.  We have instead asked the question of whether these types of engagement generate knowledge that could be brought together to produce a clear picture of the views of children in care and care leavers.

We have learned that there are many exercises that, together, provide a broadly representative evidence base.  These engagement activities include groups of children that don’t receive so much attention, such as disabled children and very young children. On the basis of this review we hope to conduct an exercise in the future to marshal this knowledge into a National Report.
