Anne Longfield, Children’s Commissioner for England said:

“Children’s social work is a tough profession where great judgement and skills are needed in literally life and death situations.  I am concerned that the closure of the College of Social Work could damage the profession’s standards and standing and ultimately, affect vulnerable children.

“At a time when cases of child abuse and neglect are at an all-time high, it is critical that there is a body that oversees and develops the profession, setting and maintaining standards and sharing best practice.  Children in care tell us that they need high quality  social workers with whom they can build strong and trusted relationships to support them to recover from the trauma they have experienced.  The professional development of social workers must be an urgent priority with the leadership and support in place to deliver .”
