Across the world, the festive season is a time for families to come together and take a well-deserved rest from of day-to-day life and work. Regardless how different nations celebrate the time of year ranges varies nation to nation.

Quite often the festive season rings in a particular type of snack, something from a Bolo de Mel all to the way to Turrón in Madeira and Spain or a Christmas cake in the UK to KFC in Japan. Similarly, folklore tells tales of a range of mystical denizens including not just the omnipresent Santa Claus but also the likes of Krampus, Olentzero, Nisse or Hajji Firuz. Naturally these figures all emerge to entertain children but speak to a greater truth: the delight in family coming together to celebrate and the importance of joy in children’s lives.

I hope all the children across the UK and their families have had a fantastic Christmas and are looking forward to the new year. As Children’s Commissioner, I look forward to continuing to put children and young people’s needs at the heart of policy and decision-making.
