Help at Hand offer free independent advice, assistance, and representation. They particularly help with cases where you aren\u2019t getting the support you are entitled to.<\/h5>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Housing and living<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.careleaversapp.co.uk\/\">care leavers app<\/a> which some Local Authorities are now using to stay in touch, provide information and advice, promote local events and services and share discounts, offers and deals.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Council tax exception for care leavers up to the age of 25 \u2013 apply via your local council webpages.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You might be eligible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/universal-credit\">for universal credit<\/a> including housing benefit. You can also search for <a href=\"https:\/\/lha-direct.voa.gov.uk\/\">Local Housing Allowance rates by postcode or local authority<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leaving Care Grant\/Setting up home allowance) \u2013 you can receive up to \u00a32,000 for furniture and equipment when moving into permanent independent housing \u2013 discuss with your PA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some local councils offer to cover your TV licence for your first year living independently.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/wearesettle.org\/our-programmes\/\">Settle programme<\/a> is made up of weekly, one-to-one sessions that are delivered by Programme Officers in your home. They help with managing money and increasing income, offer practical guidance for independent living, and getting extra help when it\u2019s needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maryannehodd.co.uk\/the-guarantor-scheme\">Guarantor scheme<\/a> is where your Local Authority acts as the Guarantor if you\u2019re leaving foster care and want or need to go into the private rental sector. Check with your PA if your Local Authority has signed up to the scheme or runs their own.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Princes Trust have pulled together a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.princes-trust.org.uk\/help-for-young-people\/who-else\/housing-health-wellbeing\/supported-housing\">organisations that can help offer advice and on finding and living in Supported Housing<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some gas, electric and water suppliers offer discounts to care leavers \u2013 check with your supplier.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The National Youth Advocacy Service <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyas.net\/get-support\/support-for-young-people\/care-leaver-support\/\">Knapman Fund<\/a> is available for care-leavers aged 16-25 living in England and Wales who have previously been supported by NYAS. can fund a range of items, such as household goods, training courses, driving lessons and laptops.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some councils offer financial support for learning to drive, for example <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medway.gov.uk\/info\/200260\/local_offer_for_care_leavers\/771\/support_for_care_leavers\/3\">Medway Council share information on their offer<\/a>. Discuss with your PA to find out if your local council can help with these costs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Care Leavers Association have created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.careleavers.com\/what-we-do\/young-peoples-project\/leaving-care-guide\/\">leaving care guides<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reesfoundation.org\/financial-assistance.html\">Rees Foundation<\/a> offer financial support to help in emergency for things like gas or electric and essential travel costs. And if short of food they can provide grocery gift vouchers. For essential items, training courses and education.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Share Found\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/stepladder.sharefound.org\/\">Stepladder of Achievement<\/a> is online learning for building your skills and confidence in six steps: literacy, numeracy, financial capability, planning for the future, managing your money and securing further education, employment or training.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you need support with food your local council may offer supermarket vouchers or will be able to refer you to foodbanks. Talk to your PA or social worker if that would help.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.capstonecareleaverstrust.org\/\">Capstone Care Leavers Trust<\/a> award grants for education, training courses, laptops for education, study materials, driving lessons and household goods.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensadvice.org.uk\/\">Citizens Advice<\/a> offers free, confidential information and advice to assist with legal, debt, consumer, housing and other problems.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/buttleuk.org\/apply-for-a-grant\">Buttle UK<\/a> offer grants for young people up to the age of 20 to provide items and activities.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>if you have a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability and difficulty doing certain everyday tasks or getting around because of your condition you can apply for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/pip\">Personal Independence Payment<\/a> (formerly Disability Living Allowance (DLA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shelter can help with housing problems and share <a href=\"https:\/\/england.shelter.org.uk\/housing_advice\">housing advice<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Become share information to support you in <a href=\"https:\/\/becomecharity.org.uk\/get-information\/preparing-to-leave-care\/\">preparing to leave care<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&nbsp;Further and Higher Education<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Most universities have grants and support for care leavers. My office has developed a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk\/imo\/university-and-college-contacts\/\">support details and funding information for care leavers and care leaver team contacts for UK colleges and universities<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are a care leaver who is thinking about applying to university or have already secured a place we have created a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk\/imo\/practical-guide-to-starting-university\/\">practical guide for starting university<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can apply for a Higher Education bursary of \u00a32,000 paid by councils. Local councils often can support financially with your accommodation over summer as well.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Apprenticeships &#8211; As a care leaver you are entitled to a \u00a33000 bursary during the first year of an apprenticeship. This is paid via your training provider. In addition to your bursary, your training provider and your employer can each receive \u00a31000 to help support you during your apprenticeship. You can also get a Totum card from some employment unions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apprenticeextra.co.uk\/\">NUS Apprentice Extra cards<\/a> offer discounts if you are doing an apprenticeship.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/culturecard.info\/\">Culture Card<\/a> gives free access to cultural places in Cornwall for Young People who are Care Experienced, plus a guest. If your Local Authority is Cornwall you should receive one in the post.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Barnardo\u2019s Care Journeys website page has a list of places and extra discounts available at their 600 stores nationally <a href=\"https:\/\/carejourneys.barnardos.org.uk\/care-leaver-covenant\">Care Leaver Covenant | Care Journeys (barnardos.org.uk)<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some local councils and gyms offer discounted gym memberships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Your local council might offer discounted travel on public transport and bike schemes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Some local councils offer their own grants for care leavers. These can range for support to do a hobby, to purchase equipment or for training. Surrey County Council offer<a href=\"https:\/\/www.surreycc.gov.uk\/children\/professionals\/working-with-families\/celebration-fund-for-looked-after-children-and-care-leavers\">The Celebration Fund<\/a> to recognise and reward care leavers for their achievements..<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Achieving for Children (AfC) Kingston and Richmond Care Council have created a list of <a href=\"https:\/\/kr.afcinfo.org.uk\/pages\/young-people\/information-and-advice\/the-local-offer-for-care-leavers\/volunteering-and-getting-involved\/opportunities\">discounted and free tickets to theatre shows around London<\/a>. You can also get discounted tickets to <a href=\"https:\/\/mycovenant.org.uk\/opportunities\/roundhouse-theatre-discounted-theatre-tickets\/\">Roundhouse<\/a>, London.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parenting and childcare<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many Local Fire Services offer safety checks to make sure your home is safe for a young family.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you\u2019re under 20 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/care-to-learn\">Care to Learn scheme<\/a> can help with childcare costs whilst you\u2019re studying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.childcarechoices.gov.uk\/\">Childcare Choices<\/a> shares the different support you might be entitled to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gingerbread.org.uk\/what-we-do\/advice_and_support_for_single_parents\/\">Gingerbread<\/a> offer free advice and support services for single parents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frg.org.uk\/ypa\/need-help-or-advice\/care-leavers\">Young Parents Advice<\/a> offers information and advice on working with your social worker and PA.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Government website offers information on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/browse\/childcare-parenting\">childcare and parenting<\/a>. In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/browse\/childcare-parenting\/schools-education\">schools and education<\/a> section it shares how to apply for a school place and financial support you might be entitled to.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbabyssake.org.uk\/\">For Baby\u2019s Sake<\/a> is an innovative programme which takes a whole family approach to breaking the cycle of domestic abuse and childhood trauma for expectant parents and babies alike.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/start4life\/\">NHS Start4Live<\/a> offers help and advice during pregnancy, birth and parenthood. They also share advice for parents on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/mental-health\/children-and-young-adults\/advice-for-parents\/\">supporting children who are experiencing mental health problems<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You might be eligible <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/universal-credit\">for universal credit<\/a> including child tax credit.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can discuss with your PA\/social worker getting an Early Help Assessments (EHA) which is used to identify a child and family&#8217;s needs and strengths, and to plan the right support and services to address those needs at an early stage.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>&nbsp;<\/em>Jobs and skills<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>John Lewis Partnership run the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jlpjobs.com\/happier-futures\/\">Better Futures Employment Programme<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Civil Service run a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.civil-service-careers.gov.uk\/civil-service-care-leavers-internship-scheme\/\">12-month internship programme for care leavers<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/smartworks.org.uk\/about-us\/our-service\/your-appointment\/\">Smart Works<\/a> offer unemployed women or women on 0 hours contracts career coaching, one-to-one interview training and a bespoke dressing consultation to find a beautiful and high-quality interview outfit \u2013 all of which is free and the outfit is yours to keep. You can be referred to Smart Works through our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk\/help-at-hand\/\">Help at Hand service<\/a> or via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenscommissioner.gov.uk\/imo\/\">IMO<\/a>. They are also piloting a care leaver programme in London with additional benefits and with the aim to learn from the first year and roll out the programme across all the sites.
