Commenting on the Prison Reform Trust’s review into the high proportion of people in custody who have been in care Anne Longfield said:

“It is not acceptable that over a third of boys and 61% of girls in custody have care experience when they make up only 1% of the child population. We know from the many young people who do well in the care system, what contributes to their success – high quality, stable, trusting relationships with carers and professionals are critical.  We must be as ambitious for every single child in the care of the state as we are for our own children and that is why we are contributing to the Prison Reform Trust’s work to reduce the proportion of young people in the criminal justice system who have been in care. We welcome the review and look forward to playing an active role”
