What is stress?

Stress is when you feel nervous, upset and on edge. These feelings don’t go away quickly. Stress is a response to a daily pressure (something that happens most days) and is caused by something specific, such as an exam, schoolwork, going away on a trip, or someone behaving in a way that upsets you.

Stress is mostly short-term meaning it doesn’t last very long and you can usually manage it. The feeling of stress should disappear once the reason or trigger goes away, for example once you’ve done your exam, or been on your trip.

Although stress often goes away and you may be able to manage your feelings on your own, you might need a bit of help coping with it.  This means talking to someone you trust such as your mum or your carer, a school nurse or your doctor.

Just remember, everyone feels stressed sometimes and you are not on your own. Talking about how you feel to someone you trust can help you cope and learn how to cope with your feelings.
