How do I register with a doctor?

You no longer have to register with an individual doctor. Instead, you need to join a GP practice which is a group of GPs who work together in a building usually called a surgery or health centre.

You can only register with a surgery if you live in the area that they look after. To find out which surgeries you could join near where you live, visit this website. Once you’ve found a surgery near you, you will need to call the surgery and ask to register. You do not need to tell them why you need to see a doctor. They might ask you to come into the surgery to fill in some forms, or you might be able to do this just before your first appointment with them.

Once you are registered with a doctor’s surgery, if you need to see a doctor in the future, you just need to call them and ask for an appointment. You can book appointments with either a doctor or a nurse. If you want to take someone else with you, you can. If you think you might need a physical examination you have the right to ask for a chaperone (someone from the surgery who is the same gender as you) to be present.
