Children's Commissioner response to the Government's Obesity Strategy

23 January 2008

"Many aspects of today's lifestyles have a detrimental impact on the physical and mental health of children, such as our 'fast food culture' and lack of exercise. I welcome the commitment to invest in tailored support to help those who are already overweight to change their lifestyle. It is important for all health professionals to play their part in helping families to live healthier lives.

"Children, young people and their parents need clear information to make the best choices about the food they eat and I am encouraged by the proposals for a single food labelling system that everyone can understand. Now that tackling obesity is high on the agenda, I want to see a firm commitment made to introduce a 9pm watershed on junk food TV adverts to further limit young people's exposure to unhealthy foods."
